Giants 🌲

Where giants once stood
Encircled by woodsmen to cut them down to size
Brought there by felled cousins in buckboards
Broken stones in concrete rise
Sheltering people who dance in the comfort
Of sterile future ruins
That will crumble to deserts of crowded Pygmy moss
Where the whispers of giant ghosts
Can’t be heard over the roaring silence

Trans Pride 🏳️‍🌈

We march in the sun
Because we spent so long in the dark
And when we’re seen
No one can claim we don’t exist
Because no matter what
We’re not going back to the shadows
So look at us
Because here we are
Here to stay

Gears ⚙️

If you wait long enough
Time’s gears turn all to level
Grinding mounts to sand
Filling dim vales
Allowing us pause on the flats
To scoop and count the grains
In brighter light

Summer

Buttercups retire in late evening shadow
Green crowns catch the sun before it drops away
Children cry in joy at bedtime delayed
Summer time is here

Spiders 🕷

Baby spiders
Build their webs
Invisible amongst the blades
Until mist comes
Revealing a miniature canopy of death

I blunder through
A gargantuan reaper
In hidden worlds unto themselves

Wait

We wait in the waiting room
Where the fish in the tank have a tired look
Weary of the glass house they live within
Unable to tap their tormentors back
A puppy comes to visit and fingers stroke and pet
Before going into people’s mouths while clad in rubber
The TV spills cloying tones of childhood drama
Before piping laughter makes it all right
On this Juneteenth we wait and wait
Thinking of a pregnant mother shot holding a knife
Cut down before her children
And where and how long they may wait to hear
Their own laughter again
And who will tell them why their mother died
While killers walk free
After the world watched them slay
We’ll wait and wait and wait
In our glass houses

Dad

I’m sorry he said
In that way of saying without meaning
Before turning back to his beer
Unaware the hollowness of his words
Rang like a bell
To remind me of all his other empty words
I swallowed for sustenance
But which left me starving
Always starving
For a dad to nourish me with love
Instead of the person I knew
Who was a walking buffet of rejection
With a dessert of resentment
For the kids he never wanted
