Pieces

Needs long denied
Drive torments unseen beneath false smiles
Presented for birthright owners of wholes
By those falling to pieces

Stairs

Carved in stone
One after the other
Stairs lead down
From sunlit mountaintop
Into shadowed valley
Where sunlight naught falls

In benthonic dimness moss strains up
Away from black illume
Forcing shuffled steps
Upon treads of soft menace
Leading ever closer
To nullity’s infinite riser

Eyes

What pretty flowers she said
While reaching out to touch them
Before napping again
Until eyes opened unseeing
To be closed by gentle hands of war
When sleep was at an end

Rats

Lies burrow into my brain
Like rats gnawing through stones of thought
To establish a foul nest of doubt
That leaves truth damp with dew in numberless false dawns
And spoilt in the dark

Grief

Grief lurks in night
Rearing up in dreams
With friends lost in the past
Who knew the now gone recent present
Doubling the pain

Grief lies in wait in day
In smells transcending time
To moments dimly recalled
Illuminating them in the bright emotion
Of happiness blazing with a corona of sadness

Grief hides in plain sight
In familiar gazes frozen by glass
Vital lives now dust
Staring at curious generations unimagined
Who see only strangers looking back

Grief slinks in with unknown confidantes
Bearing loss for their confessor and conspirator
Mourning the years gone by
At touches and contacts lost
Bearing witness to a chosen loneliness

Grief is patient
Biding its time for moments unexpected
Souring sweet thoughts
And brushing aside thoughtful caresses
From those who try and chase it away

Grief is a vast ocean without end
Yet it dissolves into each gulping breath
Choking less and less
Until learning to swim
Making way to land
And turning its roaring surf
Into a comfortable presence
Until the next tsunami
Sweeps us out to sea again
And we learn to swim anew

#MarchForScience

The scientists go marching
While the world is parching
The politicians that ignore the truth
Need a swift kick out the voting booth
The denialists may splutter
But we’ll just have to make them scutter
Else the seas will turn toxic
Leaving us all hypoxic
While it swirls around our knees
Completely unconcerned with our pleas

So stand behind science
As a way to show defiance
Against those who will not think
And would bring us to the brink
Without a single clue
Just for a dollar or two
For there is no worth
One can put on the Earth
So we’d better take care of it
And stop treating it like shit
Because if we don’t take care of our only home
Our species will end up fossilized in the loam

With all our voices silent
After an end so violent
They’ll be no one around to rhyme
Until they evolve back up out of the slime
I’m sure they’ll laugh at our folly
While feeling very jolly
On the warm waters and beaches we left behind
The only lasting legacy of mankind

Crimes

An hour is a lifetime
When spent indoors
On a sunny day
For crimes of darkness
